What do I do with my hands during a headshot photo shoot?
Posted on
I’m Lauren Psyk, a headshot and brand photographer in Brighton.
Want to know THE top question I get asked at the start of one of my Brighton headshot photo shoots?
It’s this: “What do I do with my hands?!”
It’s a curious phenomenon, because you never normally worry about your hands! But suddenly, when the camera starts rolling, you feel like you’ve got these two huge lumps of meat attached to your arms and you’ve no idea what to do with them.
This feeling is a symptom of being self-conscious, which we ALL are at the start of a headshot photo shoot (even the most hardened models still get nervous).
It’s my job to help you relax during your photo shoot and feel at ease, so you’re in the moment and your hands just look natural, like they always do.
BUT, there are some simple things you can do during your headshot shoot to make this easier.
-
Hold something
Holding a prop (especially at the beginning), is a great way to relax into your Brighton headshot shoot. You don’t have to worry about your hands, AND it helps to tell a story. Double-win! Even just a takeaway coffee looks good (and has the added benefit of a caffeine boost!)
-
Wear something with pockets
It’s a good idea to choose a dress or a jacket with pockets. Not only does it solve the hands issue, the ‘hands in pockets’ pose also looks great!

Let go of your inhibitions and embrace the silliness!
Let me tell you…there is ZERO judgement from me during your brand photo shoot. If you want to dance, sing, jump around, pull a silly pose, I am totally here for it. I absolutely LOVE it when clients go for it during their Brighton headshot shoot, that’s when the magic happens!
